What Is a Ketubah?
The ketubah is the Jewish marriage contract, and one of the oldest continuously practised traditions in Jewish life. It records the couple, the date and the place of the wedding, and sets out the commitments each partner makes to the other. Today it is as much a piece of art as a document — signed before the ceremony, read under the chuppah, and hung at home for decades afterwards.
When Is the Ketubah Signed at a Jewish Wedding?
Almost always shortly before the ceremony, in a quiet room while guests are still arriving. For many couples it is the calmest and most personal part of the day. Your officiant reads the text aloud, the witnesses sign, and in many communities the signing flows straight into the bedeken. The ketubah is then carried to the chuppah and read again in front of everyone.
Who Signs the Ketubah?
Two witnesses sign in every tradition. Who may serve as a witness varies — some communities require two observant Jewish witnesses unrelated to the couple, while modern and egalitarian ceremonies are far more flexible and often add signature lines for both partners and the officiant. Ask your Rabbi early, and tell us before we print so the document matches your ceremony.

The wording is a separate choice from the artwork, and every design works with every text we offer: traditional Aramaic, Conservative with the Lieberman clause, Reform, egalitarian, Sephardic, interfaith, secular humanist, LGBTQ+ and nonbinary, in Hebrew, English or both. Two to three months before the wedding is comfortable: it leaves room for the questionnaire, the proof and any changes your officiant asks for. Shorter timelines are often possible — if your date is close, contact us before ordering and we will tell you honestly what we can do.
Frequently Asked Questions
Not really. A ketubah is a Jewish marriage contract setting out the commitments each partner makes to the other, and it predates the modern prenuptial agreement by around two thousand years. It is not a civil legal document and does not replace a marriage licence.
There is no rule. Traditionally the groom's family took care of it; today most couples buy it together, and it is also a common gift from parents or close family.
